How do I pay child support?

If there is a Court Order for child support, it will be filed with the Family Responsibility OƯice (FRO).
The FRO collects payments from the Payor and sends payments to the recipient. The Payor has the
option to send the support payment to the FRO via online payment methods or cheque.
If you have a regular source of income, a support deduction notice can be sent to your employer or
another income source. This will allow your employer to deduct the child support payable from your
income and send it to FRO to pay the support payment.

In Ontario, there are no set end dates for child support. Court Orders may have an end date set by the
court or a ‘terminating event’, when a child reaches a certain life stage or independence. Both parents
must agree on the end date/terminating event. If the parties cannot come to an agreement, they may
have to go to court and have a judge decide.

If there is no Court Order but you have a Separation Agreement detailing the child support obligations,
you can elect to pay child support directly to the support recipient. Methods that can track the payments
are recommended (ex. Email money transfer). Alternatively, you can file the Separation Agreement with
the Court and request that it be sent to the FRO for enforcement.
